Acoustics Engineering

Inappropriate acoustics in the workplace contribute to annoyance, stress, loss of concentration and lower operator performance. In operational environments, achieving a balance between acoustic privacy and intelligibility is essential. The acoustic environment should be designed to match the auditory tasks being undertaken, particularly where safety critical messages are being conveyed or critical auditory alarms are used.

At the planning stage, the location of a control centre and the positioning of the control room within a building need to consider potential sources of external noise such as road traffic and flight paths. Similarly, control rooms should be positioned away from sources of vibration such as back-up generators and compressors.

What do we do?

CCD undertakes noise surveys and produces computer models of the acoustic environment as a basis for developing operational room layouts.

Interior finishes to walls, floors, ceilings and furniture are selected and advice given on the management of auditory alarms to provide a working environment with the required balance of background noise, ambient noise and reverberation time.
