Control Room Design

Control centres are complex environments.  Their effectivness in delivering command & control, safety, etc. depends on the performance of the human operators working within them. The control room must be designed to support their tasks and needs and therefore an ergonomic approach should be taken.

CCD is a world leader in control room design, having established over 350 major facilities over the past 30 years in both public and private sectors, including rail, emergency services, security, airports, offshore, and energy.

What do we do?

We run a multi-disciplinary control room design team qualified in Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Ergonomics and Psychology. CCD also has a team of Associate Consultants covering acoustics, specialist lighting and building services.

We have supported its customers in ensuring that the needs of operators are at the forefront of the design of these major control facilities. Our core control room skills include requirements analysis, workstation design, mock-up trials, 3D CAD visualizations, SAMMIE man-modeling and environmental design.  Our Ergonomics team also enables us to look at workload & staffing levels, organisational & team design and operational analyses.

CCD is a major contributor to ISO 11064 ‘Ergonomics Design of Control Centres'.  John Wood is Chair of the international standards group developing this standard and our ex-Design Director supports the group as the UK Expert. This ensures that CCD has the most up to date information on compliance standards and best work practice for control centres. CCD applies ISO 11064 procedures throughout every control centre project.
