Lighting Design

It is widely acknowledged that people prefer working in an environment with natural light. A good view of the outside world provides the opportunity for refreshment and relaxation afforded by a change of scene and focus. The external view also allows the eyes an opportunity to relax, which is particularly important if the work being carried out involves looking at detail at close distances. Natural daylight also contributes to the saving of energy.

However, a high proportion of illumination in the workspace will need to be provided by artificial light, even during the day. Lighting arrangements, whether natural or artificial, must be carefully specified such that visual tasks are performed efficiently and effectively - this is especially critical for a 24/7 facility.

What do we do?

Good lighting design is therefore key to the success of the workplace, whether a control centre or an office complex. CCD's design approach addresses the balance between daylight provision, ambient illumination and local tasklighting to deliver lighting schemes for VDU environments which optimise visual performance at the workplace - designs which also have the in-built flexibility to take account of future changes in equipment, staffing levels, workstation layouts, room layout and operating procedures.
