Terminal 5 Main Baggage Control Facility

BAA T5

background

A major component of any airport is the ability to efficiently handle the passenger baggage through the terminal.  For T5, the project baggage team recognised the importance of having the control room well designed with ergonomics in mind.

project

We were commissioned by BAA to deliver a design process compliant with ISO 11064 Ergonomic Design of Control Centres. The Brief included the development of operational requirements, workstation design, control room layout, environment design, design of peripheral furniture such as storage, meetings desks, etc, and interior design.

implementation

CCD provided a small project team involving our Industrial Designers and Ergonomists.  We developed a full scheme design including furniture and interior finishes.  This was presented to the T5 team using sample boards and 3D CAD visualisation.  We also advised the project team on controlling the environment in the room including lighting design and the selection of acoustic ceiling finishes.  The design was developed through to a design specification that BAA could use to tender for contractors to deliver the finished room.

OUTCOMES

The CCD designed control room was delivered as part of the flagship T5 development and is successfully operating the complex baggage handling system in the terminal.

Throughout the project, we maintained a strong working relationship with key stakeholders including operators, baggage handling system engineers, architects, IT engineers, and H&S representatives.  This was a key aspect in the smooth delivery of the design process.
