Tube Lines
Background
Tube Lines has a 30 year Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract with London Underground for the maintenance and upgrade of the entire infrastructure on the Jubilee line, Northern line and Piccadilly line. Over a four year period, CCD has provided control room design and ergonomics expertise for the renewal of more than 20 station control rooms.
Project
Staring with a detailed analysis of the needs of the station staff, in each case we have designed control room furniture, determined the optimum location of all control room equipment and advised on the lighting and building services.
We have also been able to advise on the likely workload of station staff and on the implementation of a new CCTV and station management system to ensure system usability.
Implementation
We have been able to cost effectively develop and apply a common design across a variety of different locations, adapting it to local needs. In addition, our approach to design enabled us to provide a critical interface between the project engineers and the London Underground users.
The design process has engaged those users, for example through design workshops and mock-up exercises, to gain crucial buy-in and deliver a positive user experience both with the process and with the result.
We have worked within LU standards for Human Factors integration producing HF Integration Plans for each station and maintaining Human Factors Issues Logs.
We have delivered specific tasks to support the implementation of the design including human factors drawings identifying the location of all equipment in the control room and CCTV reports detailing how images should be displayed to support local operating conditions. These have been delivered both as CAD layout drawings and conceptual visualisations in SketchUp.
We have also supported the delivery of the design solution through pre and post commissioning inspections and reports.
Outcome
We have completed station control rooms for stations including Canary Wharf, Chalk Farm, Heathrow T4, Vauxhall, Marble Arch and Edgware Road.
The quality of design provided by CCD is delivering a better working environment for the Underground staff as well as enabling a better level of service to be provided to passengers in terms of their safety, security and journey information provided.
